ASSTR FTP Server, Author Server, etc Down - NEWS

Saw this posted to a newsgroup. Looks like the admins are working steadily on solving the ASSTR server issues :)

Just a quick update…

We have decided to migrate the site from our rack of server equipment
to a single server whose hardware will be owned and maintained by our
ISP.  This way we will no longer have to deal with the kind of
headaches we’re currently trying to resolve, and we’re also cutting
our monthly costs down from $500/mo to $200/mo.

We’re in the process of getting this new machine setup; hopefully it
will be all up and running before Sep 1, but no guarantees (our ISP
has not even built it, let alone started installing the OS, etc. yet).

In the meantime we’re also trying to get a complete backup off the old
server.  It will stay up for a random amount of time before crashing,
so we have to come up with a clever way to do a backup that can resume
where it left off after a crash.

Our ISP charges $150/hr if they have to open up a machine to work on
it, and due to the possible RAID drive configuration of the crashed
server, we may not be able to easily move the drive(s) from the
existing machine to another and get any of the data off it/them.  That
said, I’m fairly confident that we’ll be able to get a complete backup
from it eventually.

I appreciate all the well wishes and offers for assistance.  We’re not
really setup to be able to easily accept assistance right now, but in
the future we would like to be able to get some technical assistance
maintaining and improving the site.
